The school
Learn fast, safely
The In The Open school is based at Cap Est, Le François, on Martinique’s Atlantic coast. The trade winds blow steadily and the lagoon offers both shallow areas — perfect for learning while standing — and open water to progress.
Fabien never takes more than two students at a time. With the radio helmet he coaches you live throughout the session, and the safety boat stays close by. The gear is renewed every year.

You hold the wing in your hands, the board flies on its foil. Accessible, playful, exhilarating — and possible in light wind.

An insurance licence (third-party liability + repatriation) is required for supervised riding. Fabien will tell you how to get it online before your first lesson.

Le François is home to a string of islets and white sandbanks protected by the coral reef. Depending on the wind and your level, Fabien picks the ideal zone: a shallow, flat lagoon for beginners, reef waves for experienced riders.
And after the session? A swim over the white sandbanks, feet in the sand.

Your questions
I’ve never done any board sports: where do I start?
The Discovery course (2 × 2 h 30) is ideal for a first taste of kitesurfing. Want quicker results without strong wind? Wingfoiling is fast to learn: a 1 h 30 session is enough for your first sensations.
How many sessions to become independent?
It depends on each person and the conditions, but the Independence course (4 × 2 h 30) usually gets you riding your first long runs and sailing safely on your own. Fabien adapts the programme to your progress.
What if there’s no wind?
Fabien keeps a constant eye on the weather. If conditions aren’t right, the session moves to a better slot — safety and fun come first.
What is the radio helmet for?
You wear a helmet with a radio (BB Talk): Fabien talks to you live throughout the session, even from a distance. Corrections come at the right moment and you progress much faster.
From what age can you learn?
The kids’ course is open to ages 9 to 12. Older children join the regular lessons. What matters is being comfortable in the water.
